“I’m still here.” Her voice came from close by his left. “Here, sit down.” She grasped his arm and pulled him slowly downwards till he felt firm bench planks beneath him. “You can open your eyes now.”
The world seemed to fall away before him, a patchwork of green-topped trees and red-slated roofs spreading out into infinity. The clouds glowed a gentle pink as the sun boiled away into the horizon. A tiny corner of river sparkled with life in the dying sunlight. It was beautiful.
“I...” he began, but he had no words. He just looked at her and happiness blossomed in his cheeks.
